August Is The Cruelest Month

( In memory of our great leader, Father of the Nation , the Greatest Bengali of all time, Bongobondhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman who was brutally assassinated along with most of his family members by some renegade army officers during a coup on 15 August 1975. Bangladesh emerged as an independent state in 1971 after a nine months bloody War of Liberation by his great leadership against the Pakistani occupation force.)

August is the cruelest month

and the shocked boat is going mad

being alone on the vast river, though the old oars

still robust and vigilant

.

Father of the nation, you tried to shake off

the torn desires of the lazy individuals,

monied goons and the coquettish systems-

You never amassed wealth, nor did you

take the path of the mass enemies

but the silent aesthetics of the fireflies

.

You fought for the fragrance of human souls

so the people of green Bengal may restore

the lost hearts of their ancestors

.

Father,

We remember you from dawn to dust,

We follow the tune of the flute you played once

in the Race-course Maidan like the

pied piper of Hamelin

.

You’re still alive and more powerful

than the coward killers, primitive and insane,

rocky hands,

a ever blowing wind giving strength to be resilient

to fight the evil all over the world…

.

A Peace lover, Julio Curie, saviour

of the exploited, a simple angel with glow

descended down to the earth

shouldering a huge herbs to heal the wounded —

Kamrul Islam, Director at HSTTI Rajshahi, was born in Kushtia, Bangladesh. He is a bilingual poet. Also an essayist, translator and a short story writer. The variegated panorama of Bangladesh as well as its people , their long struggle from language movement to liberation war , war-after turmoil and other phenomena are rippling on the surface of his poems. His poetry also incorporates the world with its fogs and lights .A cosmopolitan mind sways over the branches of his poetic zone. His essays on different topics have already created appeal to the avid readers. Eleven books of poems, four of essays and one of short stories have got published until now. He is vigorously searching for the new horizon of poetry and trying to make a room of his own. He has been honoured by Gujarat Sahitya Academy, India’s Governmental Premier Institute in Literature and Motivational Strips, the world’s most active writers’ forum , on India’s 74th Independence Day. He has won a few certificates of excellence participating in poery contests globally. His poems have been published in different magazines at home and abroad.

Cruel agosto…

Enloquece solitario el bote a mitad del vasto río

y los antiguos remos siguen fuertes.

Padre de la nación,

juntaste el anhelo despedazado

en la individualidad

por la codicia

del cautivador sistema.

Tú nunca acumulaste riquezas,

no tomaste la senda enemiga de la masa,

seguiste la estética silenciosa de luciérnagas.

Luchaste por la fragancia del alma humana,

los verdes bengalas restauraron el corazón de sus ancestros.

Padre,

te recordamos desde el alba hasta el polvo.

Seguimos la melodía de flauta

que tocaste en la primera travesía

como flautista de Hamelin.

Continúas vivo.

Más fuerte que los cobardes,

dementes asesinos

de pedregosas manos.

El viento permanece soplando,

nos da fuerza, resilencia,

para combatir la maldad en el mundo…

Amante de paz, Julio Curie,

libertador de los explotados,

ángel cuyo resplandor se regó en la tierra

y empujó la vasta yerba

para sanar las heridas.
